Monday 19th November was the start of Islam Awareness Week thoroughout the U.K. A charity Muslim organisation based in Canary Wharf held their Islam Awareness Day on the 21st November. Alhamdu'Lillah they held an exhibition called 'Me, My Mate and Islam' during lunch hour and then there was a talk by Ibrahim Mogra entitled,'Islam, So what's it all about then?' in the evening.
I had the pleasure of attending both events and i must say i enjoyed them both. There was plenty to see and read at the exhibition and Ibrahim Mogra was a delight to listen too. 'Islam is a way of life, not just a religion' he said. Funny i've never thought of it in that way.
However, i was really disappointed to see a low turnout of Muslims let alone NON-Muslims. Out of the 78,000 people working in and around Canary Wharf there must have been 10-15 of them at the Ibrahim Mogra event. Where were they all? surely they could not have all been watching the football? Nor could they all have used up their orange wednesday vouchers at the movies or even gone to Allah Made Me Funny's stand up show in Hammersmith....then again!!
On a serious note, Muslims should come together and support such events as much as they can, through our support charities such as these will succeed in combating islamophobia and create much needed islam awareness.
